Domains

Start with the name

Register a new domain, or move one you already own. UK and global extensions, DNS you can edit yourself, and first-year and renewal prices shown together before you commit.

  • Registered in your name, not ours
  • DNS management included
  • Renewal price shown before you buy
  • We check DNS and mail records before the switch

How a domain reaches you

Search it, take it, then it is yours to run

The same three stages whether the name is new or already registered somewhere else.

Find the name first

Search the name above and we check it against the extensions we register. Nothing about availability or price is claimed until the search runs, and the price you see at checkout is the price you pay.

  • Prices are shown before you order
  • Renewal price shown before you buy

Not sure which extension?

A .co.uk says the business is British. A .com says it is not only British. Buying both is common, and forwarding one to the other costs nothing extra.

Registering a new domain

Search for the name, choose the extension, and it is registered to you. If you host with us we point it at your site and issue the certificate. If you do not, we give you the records you need.

  • Registered in your name, not ours
  • DNS management included
  • Renewal price shown before you buy

Transferring one you own

Remove the transfer lock at your current registrar and get the authorisation code, and we handle the rest. A transfer does not interrupt a website or email that is already working, as long as the records move with it, and we check that they do.

  • We check DNS and mail records before the switch
  • UK domains transfer by IPS tag
  • Remaining registration time is carried over
Transfer a domain

The domain stays yours, and so do the records

A domain registered through us is registered in your name. You can edit the DNS, point it wherever you like, and take it elsewhere if you ever want to. We will not hold a transfer hostage.

DNS management covers A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT and SRV records, with sensible defaults already in place so nothing breaks the day it is registered.

  • Forwarding: point a spare domain at your main site, or forward a name you bought to protect the brand
  • Privacy where available: ID protection on the extensions that support it
  • Renewals you can see coming, with the price visible in your Client Area

What the registries decide, not us

Some registries, including .uk, publish or restrict registrant data under their own rules, so ID protection is offered only on the extensions that support it.

The ones most British businesses want

Registration, transfer and renewal prices are quoted live at search against current registry pricing, and the first-year and renewal figures are shown together at checkout. We do not print a headline price here that might not be the one you are charged.

After you have the name

Holding on to it, and putting it to work

Registering the name is the first step. These are the two things most businesses do next, and both are cheaper than fixing them later.

Protect the obvious variants

Most businesses register the .co.uk and the .com, and often a common misspelling as well. It costs very little each year and it stops somebody else owning the address your customers type by mistake.

  • .co.uk
  • .uk
  • .com
  • .net
  • .org

Put your email on it

A domain is an email address as well as a web address. Hawthorne puts professional mailboxes on your own name and keeps them separate from your website hosting, so a change to one does not disturb the other.

Before you register anything

The name is the part you cannot change later

Everything else about a website can be redone. The address is the thing that ends up on the van, the invoice, the shop front and every email you send, so it is worth an afternoon of thinking rather than the first thing that is free.

Short is better than clever. Say it out loud and see whether the other person has to ask how it is spelled. If you trade mainly in the UK, a .co.uk reads as a UK business, and holding the matching .uk alongside it costs little and saves an argument later.

  • Registered in your name, not ours
  • DNS records you can edit in your control panel
  • First-year and renewal prices shown together
  • Matching email addresses on the same name
  • Transfers in from another registrar are welcome

Questions about domains

If the answer you need is not here, ask us.

Ask a question
Does searching here check availability?

Yes. The check is live against the registry, and nothing is claimed about a name until it runs.

Can I keep my domain where it is and host with you?

Yes. You only need to point two or three records at us, and we will tell you exactly which ones.

Who owns the domain?

You do. It is registered to you, and you can transfer it away at any time.

What is an IPS tag?

It is how .uk domains move between registrars. Instead of an authorisation code, your current registrar sets the tag to ours and the domain follows.

What happens if I forget to renew?

You get reminders before the date. After expiry most extensions have a grace period, and then a redemption period where recovery costs more. Tell us quickly and we will say exactly where the domain stands.

Small by name.
Serious about the work.
